Hazard Information and Maps
Geologic hazard information and maps can help Utahns make informed decisions about property, life safety, and financial risk. The UGS routinely investigates geologic hazards in Utah and publishes a variety of reports, maps, and digital data to help reduce the risk from geologic hazards.
HAZARD MAPS & PUBLICATIONS
Maps, reports, and other publications from geologic hazard investigations indicating the location and relative severity of specific geologic hazards for local governments, elected officials, prospective purchasers, landowners, and others to make informed decisions.
PALEOSEISMOLOGY OF UTAH SERIES
This publication series provides critical information regarding paleoearthquake parameters such as earthquake timing, recurrence, displacement, slip rate, and fault geometry. This information can be used to characterize potential seismic sources and evaluate the long-term seismic hazard presented by Utah’s Quaternary faults.
COSTS OF GEOLOGIC HAZARDS
Geologic hazards that are not accounted for in land-use and project planning, design, and construction often result in additional unforeseen construction and/or future maintenance costs, and possible injury or death.
WORKSHOPS AND SHORT COURSES
General and technical geologic hazard educational opportunities sponsored by the UGS.
CURRENT PROGRAM PROJECTS
Engineering and geologic hazard geologists work on a variety of investigation, mapping, and applied research projects, along with various public outreach activities. The goal is to raise awareness, educate, and inform others to help reduce Utah’s risk from geologic hazards.
