Teaching Kits

The Utah Geological Survey has hands-on teaching kits available for Utah elementary and secondary schools free of charge (with a refundable deposit) on a range of topics related to the state school science curriculum. To reserve a kit, please call (801) 537-3300 or email either Jackson Smith, jacksonsmith@utah.gov or Jim Davis, jmdavis@utah.gov. Kits must be picked up and returned to the UGS office at the Department of Natural Resources Building at 1594 West North Temple, Salt Lake City.

Rocks, Minerals, and Fossils

Contains 70 specimens, Utah fossil environment map with information, mineral testing kit, teaching manual, and activities geared to the 7th-grade core curriculum.

Dinosaurs of Utah

Dinosaurs of Utah

Contains 36 cast specimens, including skin impressions, teeth, claws, a Stegosaurus plate, teaching aids, and teaching manual.

Loan period: Two weeks

Contains fault blocks, Wasatch fault fly-by video, maps, PowerPoint presentation, teaching manual, and activities geared to the 5th-grade core curriculum.

Contains 14 fossil specimens including a giant sloth claw and musk ox horn, Utah relief map showing glaciers and Lake Bonneville, PowerPoint presentation, and a teaching manual.

Stream table teaching kit.

Includes sand; a 4′ x 1′ tray; buckets, easy-to-use gravity plumbing, and teaching manual. Self-contained trays help prevent messes.
