Teaching Kits

The Utah Geological Survey has hands-on teaching kits available for Utah elementary and secondary schools free of charge (with a refundable deposit) on a range of topics related to the state school science curriculum. Please call (801) 537-3300 to reserve a kit. Kits must be picked up and returned to the UGS office at the Department of Natural Resources Building at 1594 West North Temple, Salt Lake City.

Procedures for UGS Teaching Kit Pick-up and Return

*Please practice respiratory etiquette. In order to protect the public, UGS staff will wear a face mask during kit pick-up and drop-off. Those picking up or dropping off kits are encouraged to do the same.

Pick-up

Please call ahead to reserve a kit to ensure that one will be available. Call 801-537-3300, or confirm a kit by email: jmdavis@utah.gov.

The exterior of kits and content containers have been disinfected. To minimize the risk of infection from kit contents, kits will have been shelved for a minimum of 72 hours before kit pick-up.

If you would prefer not to enter the Department of Natural Resources building when you pick up your kit, we will come out to the parking lot to check a kit out to you. Please have cash, check, or credit card ready for the refundable deposit. Deposit for Dinosaur kit is $100, all other kits are $50. See below for more kit details.

Return

Please wipe down the exterior of kits with a disinfectant before kit return.

If you would prefer not to enter the Department of Natural Resources building when you drop off your kit, we will come out to the parking lot to retrieve your kit; please call 801-537-3300 between 8 am – 5 pm, Monday–Friday, to arrange a drop-off time.  Kits may also be returned to the Natural Resources Map & Bookstore on the first floor of the Department of Natural Resources building at the west end of the main lobby; be sure to communicate to a bookstore clerk that you are returning a teaching kit.

Rocks, Minerals, and Fossils

Contains 70 specimens, Utah fossil environment map with information, mineral testing kit, teaching manual, and activities geared to the 4th- and 8th-grade core curriculum.

Loan period: One month
Deposit: $50.00 refundable

Dinosaurs of Utah

Dinosaurs of Utah

Contains 36 cast specimens, including skin impressions, teeth, claws, a Stegosaurus plate, teaching aids, and teaching manual.

Loan period: Two weeks
Deposit: $100.00 refundable

Landforms

Landforms

Contains fault blocks, Wasatch fault fly-by video, maps, PowerPoint presentation, teaching manual, and activities geared to the 5th-grade core curriculum.

Loan period: One month
Deposit: $50.00 refundable

Ice Age

Ice Age

Contains 14 fossil specimens including a giant sloth claw and musk ox horn, Utah relief map showing glaciers and Lake Bonneville, PowerPoint presentation, and a teaching manual.

Loan period: One month
Deposit: $50.00 refundable

 

Stream Table

Stream table teaching kit.

Includes sand; a 4′ x 1′ tray; buckets, easy-to-use gravity plumbing, and teaching manual. Self-contained trays help prevent messes.

Glacier Models

Includes 2 glacier models and a teaching manual.

Loan Period: One month
Deposit: $50 refundable

Plate Tectonics Globe

Includes globe model and detachable plates (as a plates puzzle).
