Volunteer Information
The Utah Geological Survey hosts free, hands-on activities for school groups (usually students from 4th to 8th grade) to celebrate Earth Science Week during October. Activities are held at the Utah Core Research Center: 240 North Redwood Road, Salt Lake City, Utah 84114. Explore the page below for sign-up information and volunteer activity guides. If you have questions about volunteering at UGS’ Earth Science Week, please contact Jackson Smith at jacksonsmith@utah.gov.
Earth Science Week activities at the UGS have been canceled for 2026. Stay tuned for other education and field trip opportunities this Fall!

Volunteer Guides
Volunteers will be assigned to lead an activity station based on the interest expressed in their sign-up survey. To help prepare, read the written guides for each station which highlight learning outcomes and helpful tips. New for 2024, there are training videos with an overview of the station, followed by a live run-through with a group of students. Reach out to the volunteer coordinator, Jackson Smith (jacksonsmith@utah.gov), if you have any questions!

This station may be inside or outside at water troughs. There are tables of mining equipment and mineral samples to use as teaching aids. No setup required, although if samples seem sparse when students are panning, troughs may be seeded with more samples using buckets under the tables with organizer help.
