Take a quick minute today on your afternoon break to think about earthquake preparedness. What have you done around your home to help relieve potential damage from a large earthquake? Have you talked to your family and friends, do you have an action plan if an earthquake occurs?

A team of geologists, including some of our very own Utah Geological Survey geologists, have been studying the Taylorsville-West Valley City fault over the last couple of weeks. They hope to gain a better understanding of the fault’s ability to produce large earthquakes, and if that fault tends to rupture with or without the Wasatch Fault. This 1:24,000-scale surface fault rupture map of the Honeyville quadrangle shows potentially active faults and special-study areas for the Brigham City and Collinston segments of the Wasatch fault zone mapped using primarily 0.5-meter digital LiDAR data acquired in 2013 and 2014. Fault traces were also mapped using black and white stereographic and oblique aerial photographs and previous published sources for the Wasatch fault zone and parts of the West Cache fault zone contained on the Honeyville quadrangle.

Joint Evening Meeting with Association of Environmental Geologists (AEG), Utah Geological Association (UGA), Utah Geological Survey (UGS)
“Geologic Remapping of the Warm Springs Fault”
presented by Adam McKean, Mapping Geologist with the UGS

The Warm Springs fault of the Wasatch fault zone is a down-to-the-west normal fault, bounding the western portion of the Salt Lake salient. Recent geologic remapping of the Salt Lake City North 7.5-minute quadrangle has provided us an opportunity to revisit the Warm Springs fault and its place within Salt Lake and Davis Counties. A draft map of the quadrangle and evidences for the Warm Springs fault location will be presented at the meeting with opportunities for open discussion, questions, and feedback. We invite the geologic and geologic engineering community and interested parties to attend the event and take part in this public comment period.

The Salt Lake City segment (SLCS) of the Wasatch fault zone and the West Valley fault zone (WVFZ) are Holocene-active faults that have evidence of large-magnitude (M ~6-7) surface-faulting earthquakes. Paleoseismic research trenches at the Penrose Drive site on the SLCS and Baileys Lake site on the WVFZ provided data that shed light on the faulting behavior and interaction of these graben-forming fault systems. Numerical age control (22 radiocarbon samples 23 optically stimulated luminescence samples) and OxCal modeling of six or seven surface-faulting earthquakes on the SLCS and four earthquakes on the WVFZ helped refine the earthquake chronologies for these faults and allowed a comparison of the chronologies to evaluate fault interaction. The chronologies, as well as vertical displacements, support a model of coseismic fault movement.

This report presents new paleoseismic information for the northern Weber segment of the Wasatch fault zone, collected as part of a joint Utah Geological Survey and U.S. Geological Survey fault-trench investigation at Rice Creek. This research, which was partially funded through the National Earthquake Hazards Reduction Program, expands the record of Weber-segment paleoearthquakes into the early Holocene, provides new timing and displacement data for the most recent earthquake, and helps reduce uncertainties in earthquake timing, recurrence, displacement, and vertical slip rate. These results are important for understanding segmentation of the northern Wasatch fault zone and for improving earthquake-hazard evaluations of the region.
