Right Hand Canyon Road Landslide, Iron County

A landslide occurred May 9, 2023, on Right Hand Canyon Road in Cedar Canyon, approximately five miles east of Cedar City. The road was damaged and subsequently repaired, although continued movement and new road damages were observed on May 22nd. The landslide was likely caused by sustained high-volume flows in Right Hand Canyon Creek that have eroded and undercut the slope that the road rests on.

Landslide Type: Rotational

Size: Approximately 120 feet wide and 50 feet long

Special Conditions: This area has had many minor slumps over the years. Both fill material and underlying weak Cretaceous-age rocks are likely involved.

Damages: A landslide scarp split and damaged the road, offsetting the asphalt up to one foot in height. After road repairs, new cracks and movement have been observed.
