Payson Canyon Landslides, Utah County

Three landslides were documented May 24, 2023, near Nebo Loop Road in Payson Canyon, west of the Peter Wimward Reservoir Road turnoff. They were likely caused by elevated groundwater levels from snowmelt. Several layers of asphalt in the damaged area indicate the landslides have been previously active in wet years and the road has undergone repairs regularly.

Landslide Type: Rotational debris slide

Size: The landslides range from approximately 50 feet wide by 30 feet long to 100 feet wide by 80 feet long.

Special Conditions: This landslide is downslope of a road cut and road-fill area within a large landslide complex.

Damages: The road has been damaged in multiple places. Road damages range from cracks a few inches wide to landslide scarps that completely cut into the road and displace asphalt.
