Little Cottonwood Canyon Landslide, Salt Lake County

A landslide occurred Tuesday afternoon, May 2, 2023, in Little Cottonwood Canyon, covering the entire roadway on SR-210 near mile marker 7. A second landslide from the same source occurred on top of the first about an hour later. The canyon was closed all day on May 2nd for avalanche mitigation, so no cars were on the road and therefore no injuries.

Landslide Type: Debris flow.

Size: About 100 feet wide and 4 feet deep, according tothe Utah Department of Transportation.

Special Conditions: Elevated groundwater levels from melting of above-normal levels of snowpack have led to springflow at the source.

Damages: Minor road damage with damaged and destroyed guard rails. No one was injured and no buildings were damaged.

Status: Spring flow is lessening.
