One of several offshoot roads that lead to collecting areas; this one is on the north side of Smelter Knolls as seen from Old Topaz Road
Lace rock variety of rhyolite at one of the collecting locations on the north side of Smelter Knolls; rock hammer for scale. Smelter Knolls contains lace rock with the characteristic “tafoni” or “honeycomb” type weathering that is desirable for use in aquariums.
Most of the rhyolite rock at Smelter Knolls is light gray in color, but darker shades can be readily found; rock hammer for scale.
