This 43-page report presents new Interferometric Synthetic Aperture Radar (InSAR) analysis of ground water subsidence in Cedar Valley in Iron County, Utah. This analysis is based on InSAR data from the ERS-1/2 satellites from 1992 to 2000, and the Envisat satellite from 2004 to 2010. A stack of five consecutive interferograms from the 1992-2000 time period and a stack of four consecutive interferograms from the 2004-2010 time period are included in this report; however, decorrelation in the vicinity of the Enoch graben makes an estimate of total deformation impossible using the stacks. In total, surface deformation has impacted approximately 256 km² (100 mi²) in Cedar Valley. Subsidence rates in the vicinity of the Enoch graben increased from approximately 0.5-1.0 cm/yr to roughly 1-2 cm/yr after 1999. Similarly, rates in central Cedar Valley show a general increasing trend after 1999, but rates appear to be more erratic than the other two sites. The spatial distribution of deformation in Cedar Valley correlates well with both the location of observed fissuring as well as the location of both municipal and private groundwater production wells. The fissuring observed near Quichapa Lake, as well as within the Enoch graben, is likely a direct result of groundwater pumping in these areas.

A new isostatic residual gravity map of the Newfoundland Mountains and east of the Wells 30×60 quadrangles of Utah is based on compilation of preexisting data and new data collected by the Utah and U.S. Geological Surveys. Pronounced gravity lows occur over Grouse Creek Valley and locally beneath the Great Salt Lake Desert, indicating significant thickness of low-density Tertiary sedimentary rocks and deposits. Gravity highs coincide with exposures of dense pre-Cenozoic rocks in the Newfoundland, Silver Island, and Little Pigeon Mountains. Gravity values measured on pre-Tertiary basement to the north in the Bovine and Hogup Mountains are as much as 10mGal lower. Steep, linear gravity gradients may define basin-bounding faults concealed along the margins of the Newfoundland, Silver Island, and Little Pigeon Mountains, Lemay Island and the Pilot Range.

The Kanarraville quadrangle includes the southern part of Cedar Valley and parts of the adjacent Kolob Terrace, Harmony Mountains, and North Hills. It straddles a particularly instructive area of structural overlap between the Sevier fold thrust belt-represented by the overturned, east limb of the Kanarra anticline exposed at the west edge of the Kolob Terrace-and the Basin and Range physiographic province, whose east margin corresponds to the Hurricane fault zone at the base of the plateau. Regional ash-flow tuffs erupted from calderas in western Utah and eastern Nevada are present in the Harmony Mountains and North Hills; in the Harmony Mountains, these tuffs are involved in a large gravity slide shed off the nearby Stoddard Mountain laccolith, which erupted to produce an ash-flow tuff now partly buried by the gravity slide.

North Logan City modified a gravel excavation site at the mouth of Green Canyon during the spring of 2011 to retain excess flow from the Green Canyon catchment. From August 2011 to March 2012, the Utah Geological Survey (UGS) monitored water flow into the gravel pit, and recorded gravity data and groundwater levels at several sites within a mile of the gravel pit. The UGS observed a significant increase in gravity from August to September in an area southwest of the gravel pit, which indicates an increase in the amount of water in that region from August to September. Based on the measured increase, water is traveling from the gravel pit towards the region of the principal aquifer of Cache Valley.

The Yellowjacket Canyon 7.5′ quadrangle is divided north-south by the Sevier fault zone with the lower Navajo Sandstone and older rocks creating the Vermilion Cliffs step of the Grand Staircase on the up-thrown block to the east, and the upper Navajo Sandstone and younger rocks creating the White Cliffs step of the Grand Staircase on the down-dropped block to the west. Exposed strata range from the Triassic Petrified Forest Member of the Chinle Formation to the Jurassic Co-op Creek Limestone Member of the Carmel Formation. Eoloian sand dunes, including those of Coral Pink Sand Dunes State Park, stretch northeast to southwest across the map area.

Geologic map of the Johnson Lakes quadrangle, Kane County, Utah, and Coconino County, Arizona,

The Johnson Lakes quadrangle includes parts of the Chocolate (Shinarump) and Vermilion Cliff steps of the Grand Staircase in the southwest part of Grand Staircase-Escalante National Monument. Reddish-brown Lower Jurassic strata of the Vermilion Cliffs dominate the map area. Overall, strata dip gently to the northwest. They are cut by the Paunsaugunt fault at the east edge of the map area, and by several minor, mostly down-to-the-west normal faults. A variety of surficial deposits locally conceal bedrock, including broad alluvial and eolian surfaces deeply incised by modern arroyos. “Picture stone” from the Shinarump Conglomerate Member of the Chinle Formation is quarried locally.
