The Waterpocket Fold of Capitol Reef National Park reveals a color-contrasting sequence of Jurrassic- and Triassic-age sedimentary rocks. The alternating red and green-gray colors indicate different environmental conditions present during each layer’s formation: the red layers have ferric iron present and formed in arid, oxygen-rich environments, whereas the green layers have ferrous iron indicating sediment deposition in oxygen-poor, underwater conditions.
