PRESS RELEASE: Utah Geological Survey Launches 2025 Calendar of Utah Geology

Salt Lake City (November 27, 2024)—Explore Utah’s breathtaking and diverse landscapes through the lens of Utah Geological Survey (UGS) employees in the 2025 Calendar of Utah Geology. Each month features a stunning photograph and description of Utah’s geological wonders.

Senior Geologist Elliot Jagniecki’s photo for July captures the striking contrast between black basalt from a collapsed Tertiary-age lava tube and the vibrant orange, red, and white hues of Jurassic-age Navajo sandstone.

November showcases an image taken by Geologist Kayla Smith at the Waterpocket Fold of Capitol Reef National Park and the color-contrasting sequence of Jurassic and Triassic-age sedimentary rocks. The alternating red and green-gray colors indicate different environmental conditions during each layer’s formation.

The Waterpocket Fold of Capitol Reef National Park reveals a color-contrasting sequence of Jurrassic- and Triassic-age sedimentary rocks. The alternating red and green-gray colors indicate different environmental conditions present during each layer’s formation: the red layers have ferric iron present and formed in arid, oxygen-rich environments, whereas the green layers have ferrous iron indicating sediment deposition in oxygen-poor, underwater conditions. Beyond the captivating images, the calendar features a simplified geologic map tracing Utah’s geological history, which spans over 2.6 billion years. This map highlights the forces that shaped Utah’s iconic red rock landscapes, towering alpine peaks, and vast basins and ranges.
