Preliminary Isostatic Residual Gravity Map of the Tremonton 30' x 60' Quadrangle, Box Elder & Cache Counties, Utah, and Franklin & Oneida Counties, Idaho

A new isostatic residual gravity map of the Tremonton 30′ x 60′ quadrangle of Utah is based on compilation of preexisting data and new data collected by the Utah and U.S. Geological Surveys. Pronounced gravity lows occur over North Bay, northwest of Brigham City, and Malad and Blue Creek Valleys, indicating significant thickness of low-density Tertiary sedimentary rocks and deposits. Gravity highs coincide with exposures of dense pre-Cenozoic rocks in the Promontory, Clarkston, and Wellsville Mountains. The highest gravity values are located in southern Curlew Valley and may be produced in part by deeper crustal density variations or crustal thinning. Steep gradients also coincide with the margins of the Promontory Mountains, Little Mountain, West Hills, and the eastern margin of the North Promontory Mountains and may define concealed basin-bounding faults.

The Johnson Lakes quadrangle includes parts of the Chocolate (Shinarump) and Vermilion Cliff steps of the Grand Staircase in the southwest part of Grand Staircase-Escalante National Monument. Reddish-brown Lower Jurassic strata of the Vermilion Cliffs dominate the map area. Overall, strata dip gently to the northwest. They are cut by the Paunsaugunt fault at the east edge of the map area, and by several minor, mostly down-to-the-west normal faults. A variety of surficial deposits locally conceal bedrock, including broad alluvial and eolian surfaces deeply incised by modern arroyos. “Picture stone” from the Shinarump Conglomerate Member of the Chinle Formation is quarried locally.

This CD contains geographic information system (GIS) files in ESRI file geodatabase and shapefile formats. Also included are two plates-the geologic map at 1:24,000 and the explanation sheet-both in PDF format. The latest version of Adobe Reader is required to view the PDF files. Specialized GIS software is required to use the GIS files.

This nine DVD set contains a descriptive 3-page report and digital files created from the Wasatch fault investigation project performed for the Utah Geological and Mineralogical Survey (now the Utah Geological Survey) and the U.S. Geological Survey by Woodward-Lundgren & Associates.  The project was performed to identify surface fault rupture hazard areas along the Wasatch fault and in Cache Valley.  This compilation contains digital scans of the three separate Wasatch fault reports, 47 fault maps, and 1326 oblique aerial photographs (frames).  The digital files include aerial photograph scans in TIFF format, fault maps in TIFF and Adobe PDF formats, and index maps in Google Earth KMZ, GIS shapefile and Adobe PDF formats.  Specialized software (not included) is required to utilize the Google Earth and GIS files, and can be downloaded from the Internet.

This compilation will be useful for professionals involved with paleoseismology investigations; geologic, geotechnical, and environmental assessment and investigation projects; land-use planning and management; government agencies; and the general public and others as an historical archive.  Oblique aerial photography was used to highlight certain topographic features, such as fault scarps and traces, for mapping purposes.

The Kelton Pass quadrangle, located at the east end of the Raft River Mountains, is a classic metamorphic core complex, in part exemplified by the Raft River detachment fault. The area contains Archean metamorphic, Proterozoic metasedimentary, and Paleozoic carbonate and clastic rocks that were intensely deformed and thinned by alternating episodes of contraction and extension during the late Mesozoic to Cenozoic.  Miocene to Quaternary sediments fill structural basins, and late Pleistocene Lake Bonneville deposits blanket low areas.
