UGS has received an exciting new core donation from Whiting Oil & Gas. It’s from four wells near the northern end of the San Rafael Swell with core from the Moenkopi Formation.

Sunset on Gooseberry Mesa shines golden light on cliffs of Triassic-age Shinarump Conglomerate and the underlying slope-forming Moenkopi Formation. White cliffs and peaks in the distance are thrones and temples of Zion National Park, formed of Jurassic-age Navajo Sandstone.

The Late Triassic-age Chinle Formation, marked at its base by the light-colored, gravelly Shinarump Conglomerate Member, overlies red beds of the Early Triassic Moenkopi Formation. Late Triassic rocks record dramatic drying of Utah’s landscape, as drab gray floodplain deposits in the lower Chinle give way to more oxidized, reddish sand dune deposits of the cliff-forming Wingate Sandstone.
