Utah paleontologists are looking for one enormous helicopter to lift a herd of dinosaurs

It may sound like fiction or a scene from Jurassic Park, but there’s a herd of Utahraptors near Moab and paleontologists are trying to figure out how to move it.

An earthquake of local magnitude 2.7 occurred at 5:32 a.m., Tuesday, about 90 miles southeast of Cedar City in northern Arizona according to the U.S. Geological Survey website. The USGS also lists the quake at 3.0 magnitude because it uses a different rating system. A micro-earthquake of local magnitude 2.0 occurred last Wednesday 5 miles south of Hurricane; and another 2.0 occurred Sunday 13 miles north-northwest of Ivins.

Job Characteristics: The incumbent in this position is responsible for design and layout of publications for both electronic and printed media, including books, magazines, brochures, posters, pamphlets, video and interactive CD-ROM, for the Utah Geological Survey. With minimal supervision, the incumbent will conceptualize, design, and layout high-quality publications using computer software (desktop publishing, graphics and multimedia programs) for print and multimedia formats, and work with Utah Geological Survey authors and other editorial staff to create specific graphics and design work for special projects (brochures, professional geologic posters, etc.). As part of the application process, in addition to completing the on-line application, applicants will be required to provide non-returnable samples of work or provide web link to a portfolio on the application. Applicants must have a strong portfolio that displays knowledge of design principles, color theory, layout skills, and typography.

A new exhibit at the Natural History Museum of Utah uses art to celebrate the state’s geology recorded in ancient dunes and seabeds and the memory of East High School English teacher Cheryl Grubb Funston.

On commission from the Funston family, Salt Lake City painter Mark Knudsen created the landscape triptych depicting three famous Utah formations: Wingate sandstone, Entrada sandstone and Mancos shale. Museum officials on Tuesday hung the three paintings on a wall that visitors pass on their way between the Earth and Sky galleries.

Salt Lake Valley, home to the Salt Lake City segment of the Wasatch fault zone and the West Valley fault zone, has been the site of repeated surface-faulting earthquakes (of about magnitude 6.5 to 7). New research trenches in the area are helping geologists and seismologists untangle how this complex fault system ruptures and will aid in forecasting future earthquakes in the area.

The incumbent in this position is responsible for Geographic Information System (GIS) map and database products for the Utah Geological Survey Geologic Mapping Program. The incumbent will scan, vectorize and prepare GIS databases and various explanatory files of geologic maps; produce derivative maps and databases; design and prepare maps and related materials for public release; and assist geologists in completing new or revised geologic maps.
