Red Pine Lake sits in a glacial cirque carved by alpine glaciation between about 29,000 and 13,000 years ago in Little Cottonwood Canyon. The light-gray Little Cottonwood igneous stock is a 30.5-million-year-old granite, quartz monzonite, and granodiorite that makes up much of Little Cottonwood Canyon.
