PRESS RELEASE: Utah Geological Survey Launches New Utah Groundwater Data Hub

Salt Lake CityThe Utah Geological Survey (UGS) has launched its Utah Groundwater Data Hub. This web application provides public access to previously unreleased groundwater data from numerous UGS studies. Features include interactive maps, customizable data downloads, and visualization tools to help users find, download, and use groundwater data from around the state.

The new Utah Groundwater Data Hub serves previously unreleased groundwater data from UGS studies in downloadable GIS packages. Each study area contains various datasets, including hydrogeologic units, potentiometric surfaces, transmissivity, streams, wells, and more.

This new platform will help researchers, water managers, policymakers, and the public understand Utah’s complex groundwater systems.

The Utah Groundwater Data Hub is an ongoing project; new datasets will be added over time. It includes selected data on UGS groundwater studies, water level trends, Great Salt Lake groundwater and wetland studies, and hydrogeologic monitoring of watershed restoration.

“The groundwater data hub represents a significant step forward in our commitment to making scientific data accessible to all,” said UGS Groundwater and Wetlands Program Manager Hugh Hurlow. “By sharing this data, we hope to foster collaboration and informed decision-making around water resources in Utah.”

Water level trends from UGS and U.S. Geological Survey data can be viewed in the Utah Groundwater Data Hub in a map and dashboard. Water levels over time are graphed dynamically when a well is selected from the map. Users can view the overall trends and download selected data.

The Utah Division of Water Rights, Utah Division of Water Resources, the U.S. Geological Survey and UGS provided data. Funding was appropriated in Senate Bill 2 during the 2023 legislative session to summarize the current state of knowledge of Utah aquifers to inform future projects and increase our capacity to provide groundwater data for priority areas to the Division of Water Rights to aid their decision-making process without duplicating information available elsewhere.

This valuable resource will continue to grow over time, providing an increasingly comprehensive picture of Utah’s water resources. Explore the Utah Groundwater Data Hub at geology.utah.gov/apps/gw-data-hub
