Wetland Mapping and Spatial Data

Knowing the location and extent of wetland resources is the first step to implementing appropriate conservation and management strategies. Today, spatial datasets are fundamental research tools and though wetland spatial data are available now at the state scale in Utah, much of the data are dated and do not accurately represent existing wetland resources.

The Utah Geological Survey is part of an ongoing effort to develop a comprehensive, statewide wetland mapping program with the goal of updating spatial data for wetland and riparian resources across the state.

Utah Automated Geographic Reference Center (AGRC) Wetland Data
The Utah AGRC provides an easily accessible layer of National Wetlands Inventory (NWI) data available to date. These data can be directly accessed through the AGRC State Geographic Information Database (SGID) if working in ArcGIS by following these instructions.

National Wetlands Inventory (NWI) Seamless Data Download
National Wetlands Inventory (NWI) seamless wetlands data page including a data download tool and other resources associated with NWI data. Seamless wetlands data are available by state here.

National Hydrography Dataset (NHD)
The NHD represents the drainage network of surface water and related features including rivers, streams, canals, lakes, ponds, coastline, dams, and streamgages.

Watershed Boundary Dataset (WBD)
The WBD represents enclosed drainage basins in eight different size categories.

Geospatial Data Gateway
Natural Resources Conservation Service’s one-stop source for environmental and natural resource spatial data including soils, climate, and land use.

The National Map Viewer
A U.S. Geological Survey platform to visualize, inspect, and download current topographic base map data including elevation, orthoimagery, hydrography, boundaries, transportation, structures, and land cover.
