UGS Publication Examines Utah's Energy Development Then and Now

June 15, 2001

Utah is still the place to find oil and gas according to the new Utah Geological Survey (UGS) publication, "Utah! 100 Years of Exploration…and still the place to find oil and gas." The publication, a combined effort of the UGS, the Division of Oil, Gas and Mining (DOGM), and the School and Institutional Trust Lands Administration (SITLA) provides information on the exploration and developmental opportunities of Utah's petroleum resources.

This informational brochure explains Utah's geologic setting and oil and gas exploration history. A land-ownership map is accompanied with leasing information for SITLA lands and DOGM's role and services for exploration and development of oil and gas.

Another map shows the locations of Utah's oil and gas fields. Utah's major petroleum-producing provinces (Paradox Basin, Uinta Basin, thrust belt, Uncompahgre uplift, and the Ferron Sandstone coalbed methane "fairway") are described and basic data are provided, including the number of fields and wells, production, and pipelines.

Contact information is also given for agencies involved with permitting, regulating, leasing, and geologic evaluations of these and other areas.

This brochure (Public Information Series 71), is now available for $2.00 at the Natural Resources Map & Bookstore located at 1594 West North Temple, Salt Lake City, (801) 537-3320 or toll free 1-888-UTAHMAP for those outside the Salt Lake calling area.
