New energy, mineral, and ground-water resources bulletin released
February 24, 2003

The Utah Geological Survey has released Bulletin 132, Energy, Mineral, and Ground-water Resources of Carbon and Emery Counties, Utah, which contains information on the known and potential energy, mineral, and ground-water resources in these counties.

The report discusses the present and future economic impact of mineral and energy development and concludes that there is a good potential for the discovery and development of additional occurrences of mineral and energy resources, particularly natural gas and coal.

Eight major commodity groups are discussed: (1) oil and gas, (2) coal and coal resin, (3) coal-bed gas, (4) other energy resources (oil-impregnated rock, oil shale, geothermal), (5) uranium and vanadium, (6) metallic minerals, (7) industrial rocks and minerals, and (8) ground-water resources.

Of these, natural gas and coal have the best potential for significant new discoveries. Other resources with good potential for additional discoveries and development are: gypsum, humate, dimension stone, flagstone, and limestone. Accompanying maps show locations of the known resources and areas of geologic potential.

Bulletin 132 is available for $15.95 at the Natural Resources Map & Bookstore, located at 1594 West North Temple, Salt Lake City, (888) UTAH MAP, (801) 537-3320, or mapstore.utah.gov.
