Utah Geological Survey Opens Cedar City Office
The Utah Geological Survey, in cooperation with Southern Utah University, has opened a regional office in Cedar City. Located on the SUU campus, the office will be staffed by UGS Senior Scientist Bill Lund who brings with him an expertise in geologic hazards and ground water resources.
"Urban growth in southern Utah makes our work in this region even more important," said Lund. "The UGS will be able to work more closely with local government in providing important geologic information, interpreting it and putting it to use. Our new office will also be the focal point for coordinating UGS projects in the region," he added.
Some current UGS projects in southern Utah include identifying potential landslides in and around the city of Springdale, identifying sand and gravel deposits for development in Washington County, mapping ground water aquifers in Washington and Iron Counties, assessing earthquake risks of the Hurricane fault and conducting detailed geologic mapping in Zion National Park.
The office also provides a local contact for those interested in other UGS information and services, including mineral and energy resources, paleontological resources and paleoenvironmental studies, geologic mapping, teacher/educational outreach, geologic databases and map and publication sales.
The office will serve the needs of citizens in Washington, Iron, Beaver,
Garfield, Wayne, Piute and Kane Counties. Bill Lund may be contacted at,
