Utah Geological Survey Geologists Honored for Utah Radon Gas Studies

Utah Geological Survey geologists Barry Solomon and Bill Black have been recognized by the Department of Environmental Quality for their contribution to Utah's radon control program. Plaques were presented to Solomon and Black during ceremonies Friday, November 8, 1996.

Breathing elevated levels of radon gas over time may increase an individual's risk of developing lung cancer. In response to this health risk, the Environmental Protection Agency was authorized to provide grants supporting development and implementation of state radon-assessment and mitigation programs.

Utilizing these grants, Solomon and Black have been assessing the radon-hazard potential of areas throughout the state since 1990, and presenting the results in a series of publications offered by the UGS.

"Both Bill and I are very appreciative to DEQ for their recognition," said Solomon. "The people at DEQ that we worked with also deserve recognition, especially radon program manager John Hultquist, and John's section manager, Dane Finerfrock."

UGS radon-related publications provide a thorough overview of the indoor-radon hazard in Utah. They establish the geologic basis for the hazard, map its distribution and provide both technical and non-technical discussions of the hazard. They are available at the Natural Resources Map & Bookstore, 1594 West North Temple, Salt Lake City, or may be ordered by calling (801) 537-2230, fax (801) 537-3395.
