PAMPHLET ANSWERS QUESTIONS ABOUT GREAT SALT LAKE

How much salt is in Great Salt Lake? What makes the lake stink? How does the lake affect the weather? What were Lake Bonneville's dimensions? These are just a few of the most commonly asked questions about Great Salt Lake and ancient Lake Bonneville.

Answers to "Commonly Asked Questions About Utah's Great Salt Lake and Ancient Lake Bonneville" can be found in a new publication by that name. Written by Dr. J. Wallace Gwynn and produced by the Utah Geological Survey, the new pamphlet provides a wealth of information in an attractive and compact format.

"The Great Salt Lake and Ancient Lake Bonneville continue to capture the imaginations of residents and visitors," says Gwynn, a geologist with the UGS and a recognized expert on the lake for more than 20 years. "I'm constantly asked questions about our inland sea. So, I compiled 27 of the questions I hear the most and provided an answer."

The pamphlet is now available at the new Natural Resources Map & Bookstore, 1594 West North Temple, Salt Lake City, for $2.25. Mailing address: P.O. Box 146100, Salt Lake City, UT 84114-6100; (801) 537-3320, fax (801) 537-3395.

By the way, the answers to the above questions are, about 4.5 to 4.9 billion tons; the decay of plant and animal remains around the shallow shore of the lake; it increases the moisture content of the air, resulting in greater snowfall for adjacent areas; and 325 miles long, 135 miles wide and a maximum depth of 1,000 feet.
