Ogden Valley Aquifer Study
Aimed at Helping Planners,
Residents Maintain Quality

The Ogden Valley aquifer in north-central Utah supplies water to a region experiencing rapid growth in residential and recreational development. Such activity increases the potential for water-quality degradation.

For that reason, the Utah Geological Survey, the Utah Division of Water Quality, and the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency conducted a study of the aquifer, defining its limits and identifying its recharge areas. This knowledge will help state and local governments, as well as residents, protect the quality of the ground water by illustrating where ground-water aquifers are vulnerable to contamination.

Situated between the Wasatch Range on the west and the Bear River Range on the east, Ogden Valley contains Pineview Reservoir. The ground-water aquifer is supplied, or "recharged," by surface water from the surrounding hills and mountains. Recharge areas are especially vulnerable to contamination. A new map, published by the UGS, details the primary and secondary recharge areas of the valley aquifer. The map and an accompanying publication are now available in the Department of Natural Resources Map & Bookstore, 1594 West North Temple. Orders can be placed by calling 1-888-UTAH-MAP.
