Utah Energy and Mineral Statistics

Utah Energy and Mineral Statistics is a web-based repository for energy and mineral data for the State of Utah. It contains over 100 tables and 50 figures (in both Excel and PDF formats) in nine different chapters and is continuously updated as new data becomes available.

Highlights

Oil

  • The number of oil and gas drilling permits in Utah averaged 1517 between 2004 and 2014 (Table 3.3), a major increase over the 370 permits averaged throughout the 1990s. Drilling permits dropped to 211 in 2016 as a result of low prices.
  • Utah refineries received record amounts of crude oil in 2016, with 9% coming from Canada (Table 3.14a). Canadian crude oil imports have declined over the past several years (from a high of 24% in 2002) as Utah crude oil production has increased.
  • The value of Utah’s crude oil reached a record high in 2014, even when adjusted for inflation, of about $3.2 billion (Table 3.19a). Low prices and lower production in 2015 resulted in a 54% decrease in the value of Utah’s crude oil.

Natural Gas

  • Natural gas production in Utah reached a record high in 2012, climbing to 490 billion cubic feet, but has since retreated to 423 billion cubic feet (2015). (Table 4.4).
  • Utah’s average price of residential natural gas in 2015 was only $9.72 per thousand cubic feet, the 20th lowest in the nation (Table 4.17a). As recently as 2011, Utah had one of the lowest residential natural gas prices in the U.S.

Electricity

  • In 2016, 69% of the electricity generated in Utah was from coal-burning power plants (Table 5.10a).
  • Electricity generation from natural-gas power plants more than doubled between 2006 and 2007, increasing its total share in 2016 to 23% (Table 5.10a).
  • For only the sixth time in the last 50 years, sales of electricity in Utah decreased in 2016. On average, sales of electricity in Utah increase about 4% each year (Table 5.19a).
  • Utah’s average price of residential electricity in 2015 was only 10.9 cents per kWh, the 12th lowest in the nation (Table 5.21).

Renewable Resources

  • Utah is one of only seven states to produce electricity from geothermal sources (Table 6.1)
  • Table 6.4 (pdf) in the Renewable Resources chapter lists current and proposed utility-scale renewable energy facilities in Utah. In 2015 and 2016, 846 MW of new utility-scale solar capacity came online. This new solar capacity is more than all other renewable sources combined (wind, hydroelectric, geothermal, and biomass).
