Characteristics, timing, and hazard potential of liquefaction-induced landsliding in the Farmington Siding landslide complex, Davis County, Utah, by Michael D. Hylland and Mike Lowe, 38 p., 1998 $8.25 SS-95
This group of landslides shows three, possibly four, landslide events during late Pleistocene and Holocene time, likely due to high levels of the Great Salt Lake and ground water. This study defines the boundaries, outlines the hazards, and includes recommendations for land-use planning.

Geologic evaluation and hazard potential of liquefaction-induced landslides along the Wasatch Front, Utah, by Kimm M. Harty and Mike Lowe, 40 p., 16 pl., ISBN 1-55791-687-X, 2003, SS-104 $12.95
Much of the Wasatch Front of northern Utah is underlain by saturated sandy sediments that are prone to liquefaction during moderate and large earthquakes. Thirteen liquefaction-induced landslides have been identified along the Wasatch Front by previous researchers, but development has proceeded in these areas with little consideration of the hazards from these landslides. This investigation assesses the hazard these features pose by determining if they are indeed liquefaction-induced landslides, and determines their potential for movement during future earthquakes.

Characteristics, causes, and implications of the 1998 Wasatch Front landslides, by Francis X. Ashland, 49 p., ISBN 1-55791-689-6, 2003, SS-105 $8.00
Although intended primarily for a technical audience, the general reader is introduced to the potential landslide hazards in the Wasatch Front area. Examines the relation between long-term periods of increased precipitation in northern Utah, rising ground-water levels, and decreasing hillside stability, particularly in pre-existing landslide areas. Provides valuable information on specific damaging landslides in Provo, North Salt Lake, Layton, and elsewhere with ten case histories. Recommends land-use approaches for future hillside development in landslide-hazard areas in the Wasatch Front area. Includes important data on soil strength, landslide movement, and ground-water-level fluctuations, and recommends new approaches for landslide investigations for use by geotechnical engineers and geologists in characterizing hillside stability.

Circulars

The September 2, 1992 ML 5.8 St. George earthquake, Washington County, Utah edited by G.E. Christenson, 41 p., 1995 $7.75 C-88

Guidelines for evaluating landslide hazards in Utah, edited by M.D. Hylland, 16 p., 1996 $5.50 C-92
As Utah's population grows, more development is occurring on potentially unstable slopes. Circular 92 was developed to assist geologists and geotechnical engineers in performing landslide-hazard studies. This document presents guidelines for three levels of landslide-hazard evaluation (geologic, preliminary geotechnical-engineering, and detailed geotechnical-engineering), and includes a checklist that will be used by the UGS for technical reviews, at the request of local-government agencies, of landslide-hazard reports prepared by consultants.

Guidelines for the geologic evaluation of debris-flow hazards on alluvial fans in Utah, by Richard E. Giraud, 16 p., 2005, ISBN 1-55791-729-9, MP-05-6 $6.00
The Utah Geological Survey (UGS) developed these guidelines to help geologists evaluate debris-flow hazards on alluvial fans to ensure safe development. Debris-flow-hazard evaluations are particularly important because alluvial fans are the primary sites of debris-flow deposition and are also favored sites for development. The purpose of a debris-flow-hazard evaluation is to characterize the hazard and provide design parameters for risk reduction. The UGS recommends critical facilities and structures for human occupancy not be placed in active debris-flow travel and deposition areas unless the risk is reduced to an acceptable level.

Preliminary geotechnical-engineering slope-stability investigation of the Pine Ridge landslide, Timber Lakes Estates, Wasatch County, Utah by F.X. Ashland and M.D. Hylland, 29 p., 7/97 RI-232 $3.60
The Pine Ridge landslide is the largest of several deep-seated late Holocene landslides in Timber Lakes Estates. In either the winter or early spring 1985-86, a part of this slide reactivated as a deep-seated slump. Geomorphic evidence suggests recurrent late Holocene movement in the 1985-86 slump area that has likely caused a reduction of shear strengths to residual values adjacent to slip surfaces in the slump. We believe the likelihood of future movement of the entire slide is low; however, this does not preclude the possibility of movement if the area experiences earthquake ground shaking or if a deep weak layer is present.

The feasibility of collecting accurate landslide loss data in Utah, by Francis X. Ashland, 25 p., 2003, OFR-410 $5.75
Evaluates the feasibility of collecting more accurate landslide-loss (cost) estimates in Utah. The majority of the report focuses on the current availability of landslide-loss data and uses case histories of recent damaging landslides. This report also compares the accuracy and availability of landslide-loss data from a variety of sources including media reports, county tax assessor's records, building permits, and estimates by local government officials and affected property owners. In addition, this report evaluates the potential for retrospective landslide-loss estimation using publications on the 1983 Thistle landslide, the most costly historical landslide in the United States.
