About the UGS
The Utah Geological Survey (UGS), a division of the Utah Department of Natural Resources, provides timely scientific information about Utah’s geologic environment, resources, and hazards.
This year marks the 60th anniversary of the Utah Geological Survey. Thoughout its existence, the UGS has promoted a better understanding of Utah’s geology through topical research, geologic mapping, and dissemination of information to the public, industry, educators, and policy makers. Growing from a small organization affiliated with the University of Utah and operating under a biennial budget of $25,000, the Survey now comprises six distinct scientific programs, each one exploring different aspects of Utah’s geology and energy resources, and has an annual budget of about $10 million.
